Lexington toddler killed in interstate accident

CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 75 in which a tractor-trailer truck struck a stopped car.

The crash on Tuesday morning near Clinton, north of Knoxville, killed Lillian Michelle Clarke of Miramar, Fla., and her granddaughter, 3-year-old Catherine R. Howard of Lexington, Ky.

The Knoxville News Sentinel quoted the trooper's report which said truck driver Ben Edward Parrott of Jellico failed to stop when he came upon traffic stalled by a previous crash and slammed into the rear of the victims' car. The trooper's reports stated criminal charges were pending.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported Clarke lived in Lexington until six or seven years ago and has a son who lives in the city. She was returning his daughter Catherine to him when the crash occurred.

Three other people in the car were injured.
