Man Shot By Police: Family Speaks Out

A Bourbon County man is recovering Sunday after he was shot Friday night by a a central Kentucky sheriff's deputy.

Police say Robert Brewer, 37, was drunk and threatened the deputy with a gun, but Brewer's family has a different story and says police have it all wrong.

On Sunday Brewer's brother-in-law talked exclusively to 27 NEWSFIRST and says what police thought was a gun was actually something quite different.

The Brewer family says Robert has lived a tough life.
About 15 years-ago he was involved in a car accident that left him with only one leg, and after many surgeries he is now able to get around with the help of a wooden leg.

More recently Jeff Ishmael, Brewer's brother in-law says he's been depressed over a recent divorce.

Ishmael says that's why he decided to go into this field Friday night.
Neighbors say Brewer had been drinking and was lingering around on private property and they called police.

The Bourbon county sheriff's department arrived after dark and according to Ishmael began searching the farm.

Ishmael says the police thought Brewer's wooden leg, propped up against a tree, must have been a gun, and that's what prompted police to shoot.

Kentucky State Police are investigating the shooting, but neither Kentucky State Police or the Bourbon County Sheriff Department would comment on the investigation or if Brewer had a gun at the time.

The Brewer family says the sheriff's department has not contacted them.

They're still hoping for some explanation of what happened Friday night.

PARIS, Ky. (AP) - A sheriff's deputy in central Kentucky shot a man who police said was drunk and threatening the officer Friday night.

Bourbon County Sheriff's Deputy Ed Rogers responded to a complaint about an intoxicated man on Coulthard Lane in Paris, state police said. When Rogers arrived at the home, he encountered Robert Brewer, 37, who told Rogers he had a weapon.

The officer says Brewer threatened him and then made a quick
movement. Rogers fired a shot at the man, disabling him.

Brewer was taken to the hospital in Bourbon County and was later
flown to University of Kentucky Hospital. A spokesperson for the U.K. Medical Center said Brewer is listed in fair condition.

State police are investigating the shooting.
