The family of a woman who committed suicide while behind bars is now suing the jail.

The lawsuit, filed in Franklin Circuit Court claims the jail held 44-year-old Ana Romero illegally. The Salvadoran immigrant died after hanging herself with bed sheets, while being held in the Frankfort jail awaiting deportation by federal officials. The lawsuit claims social workers and jail officials knew Romero was depressed and held her 10 days past the 48 hours allowed under federal law.
