A Central Kentucky Community honors Connecticut shooting victims

Updated: Sat 7:34 PM, Dec 22, 2012

HARRODSBURG, Ky. (WKYT)-On a cold, crisp Saturday morning, more than a dozen gathered quietly at Anderson-Dean Community Park; their thoughts with those whom they've never met.

"Everyone can't be there, so when a community can come together and do something, that's what you should do," Denise Driscoll, the organizer of the event, explained as she tied white and green balloons together.

Driscoll says since the shooting in Newtown Connecticut a little more than a week ago, each day she's felt more compassion for the victims and their families.

Organizers say they're hoping these balloons will fly for hundreds of miles to let folks thousands of miles away know Harrodsburg is thinking of them.

"I feel really sorry for the kids who died," 10-year-old Jocelyn Flores said as she held onto a balloon.

Her older sister, Sayuri, says that the balloons symbolize a lot.

"They symbolize the children being up there with Jesus. And for the parents to know that people care and not all people are bad."

The Flores family stood together quietly as each shooting victim was briefly eulogized, saying they were glad they could be together.

"It's nice feeling since I love being with my family," 15-year-old Sayuri said. "It's a very terrible thing that happened. I can't even imagine what they're going through."

As the Balloons floated away from the remembrance ceremony.... There wasn't a dry eye.
