Police: Slick roads caused horse trailer accident

Updated: Sun 8:35 PM, Mar 03, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington Police say roads in Lexington were slick early Sunday morning following the overnight snowfall that left nearly an inch of snow in most areas.

Lexington Police tell us they responded to numerous accidents in the city, including a horse trailer, carrying a horse, that rolled over on I-75.

"I'm alive, my horse is alive," Ken Jackson, the drived involved said. "Nobody else is injured."

"We ended up coming along and seeing this trailer flipped on the side of the road," Andrea Jackson, a good samaritan explained. She and a friend stopped to help right after seeing the accident.

Her friend, Emily Ropke continued "When there's a horse on the side of the road, you get it off."

Emily Ropke and Andrea Johnson work for a horse farm and were driving to check road conditions because they were thinking of pulling a horse trailer themselves. That's when they happened upon Jackson and his horse named "The Hoos" along I-75. Knowing that even a small fracture can make the difference between life and death for a horse, they sprang into action.

"He only had a few cuts and scrapes, he was pretty chill about it," Ropke said about the horse.

"These accidents can be fatal, so he was really, really lucky," Andrea Jackson continued.

"People came from everywhere. Didn't even know them," Ken Jackson said of all the people who helped. "These two ladies called a friend had a horse trailer nearby they came and took my horse to a vet and wouldn't even charge me nothing."

Semi driver also helped jackson get his truck off the road. As folks passed by, Jackson had a little advice for other drivers.

"Buddy---you learn it's in God's hands. Can't predict nothing. God takes care of everything."

Streets and Roads called in additional crews to help with slick roads.

State Police have also been working on the Interstate and State Routes to make sure they are clear.

Police are asking that if you have to travel this morning you use extra caution on the roadways.
