As we start a new work week, a large upper level ridge is planted over the Central Plains. This places the Commonwealth on the eastern periphery of the ridge (and into the heat and rising humidity). Waves of showers and storms will work around the northern edge of the ridge (the axis is in southern South Dakota) before drifting southeast through Indiana, Ohio and West Virginia. Since we’re so close to the outer edge, parts of Eastern Kentucky could experience a stray shower or storm before noon with the rest of Kentucky experiencing scattered showers and storms to develop during the afternoon hours. These scattered storms are not expected to become severe nor as intense as the outbreak late last week. Just be aware that as the afternoon progresses, these pop-up storms can develop in a short period of time.

Afternoon highs through Thursday will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s (heat indices around 100) with overnight lows in the lower 70s. Each day holds about a 30% chance for scattered showers and storms (mainly during the afternoon and early evening hours). More widespread showers and storms are expected Tuesday and sometime in the late Thursday/early Friday time period due to passing cold fronts (the timing of the latter front is most likely going to be tweaked).
