WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - Friends say Demetrious Morton isn't generally a violent person.
"Doesn't look for trouble. He'd rather walk away," said James Cook, a friend of Morton's.
But today, Morton was arraigned on a manslaughter charge in Clark County District Court. Police say he punched David Bailey died from injured he received after Morton punched him. Friends say Morton was trying to protect some children in a car they say Bailey was talking to inappropriately.
"He said when he got up on him, side raised his hands and he thought he was going to strike him and so he hit him," said Cook.
Bailey was listed as a non-compliant sex offender at the time of the incident, though police pointed out that no one involved knew that. Friends said they stand with Morton.
"Did he do the right thing? Oh yeah, if I had been there, I would have done the same thing. Obviously kids can't take up for themselves against a grown man. If a guy steps to you and raises his hands. You don't know what he's got in his hand. He could have a knife. You know, anyone steps to you, you're going to defend yourself," said Cook.
Morton is in jail on a $150k bond.
