A single spiteful email unlocks a Pandora's box

Updated: Thu 6:18 AM, Nov 15, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - A spiteful email last May to the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan started the generals scandal that's rocked the federal government.

In the email, an anonymous writer warned Gen. John Allen that his friend, Florida socialite Jill Kelley, was trouble and that he should stay away from her.

A person close to Kelley, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing investigation, says the general thought the email was a joke.

That email started a chain of events that led to the resignation of CIA Director David Petreaus, put Allen's career on hold and landed an FBI agent in hot water for talking about an ongoing investigation.

Congressional lawmakers have been grilling FBI and CIA officials about whether national security was jeopardized by the case.
