CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (WKYT)- Dressed all in black, only his nose showing, surviellance video shows a thief inside the Convenient Food Mart on South-Central Ave.
“They are very well scripted in how they do this,” said Chief Tim Hazlett of Campbellsville Police.
Thieves are breaking through doors and going straight for cash locked away in ATM machines. The latest victim was the Convenient Food Mart on South Central in Campbellsville. Similar crimes have been reported by police in London, Corbin, Williamsburg, and Barbourville.
“There were two individuals and they’re there for greed. They came for the money,” said Chief Hazlett of their crime.
In each case, the theft takes place late at night or very early in the morning, and the thieves are inside for quite some time. In the Campbellsville case police believe the thieves were inside for more than an hour.
In every case the store’s alarm system is disabled and ATM literally broken into and destroyed. An axe or a mallet was used in thefts in Whitley and Laurel Counties.
“They brought power tools and hand tools to open the ATM machine and the safe,” said Chief Hazlett.
Hazlett says he’s comparing notes with other departments but believes the pair are likely behind similar crimes not only in southern Kentucky, but in Warren, Henderson, Daviess, Hardin and Anderson Counties.
Unlike the Laurel and Whitley County cases, no cigarettes were taken from the Campbellsville store.
