Accused deputy shooter's family: 'We are so sorry'

MARION COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The visitation is tonight for Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

State police say the deputy was approaching a car during a traffic stop when the driver, 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp, open fired hitting the deputy twice.

The unexpected shooting death of Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes is still hard for some to deal with.

Even the accused shooter's family has been honoring the deputy.

"At our house, there is a flag in my front yard at half mast yesterday morning, and I don't think I'm ever going to raise that flag ever again," said Danny Krieger, Shipp's brother-in-law. "I'm speaking from the family. We are sorry that this happened to him."

Krieger says he was in contact with Shipp Wednesday after Shipp took his mother's car and gun.

He says he even alerted police about Shipp being armed.

"I said you've got to let them know. If somebody pulls him over, they have got to know that he's carrying that gun," said Krieger.

But then what Krieger says what he feared the most is what happened next.

Deputy Rakes came across the car Shipp was driving which was parked in the middle of U.S. 68.

"When he said lead in the leg and he shot at the law, I guess he didn't know that this officer didn't have his bullet proof vest on," said Krieger.

We are told that's when Shipp shot the deputy twice when he got out of the car.

Although Shipp's family can't take back what happened, they say their prayers are with the family and community.

"We are telling all the sheriff's deputies and his sisters that we are so sorry," said Krieger.

Police say Shipp had a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the leg.

He is now being treated at a Louisville hospital.
