WASHINGTON (AP) - This week in America felt like an unremitting series of tragedies. There were deadly bombs and poison letters. There was a town shattered by a colossal explosion. There was a violent manhunt that paralyzed a major city.
President Barack Obama calls it a "tough week." But he also says the response to it shows the character of the country.
America was rocked this week in rare and frightening ways. Its people are only beginning to make sense of events. But as the weekend arrived, horror was counteracted by hope.
In the words of the Rev. Roberto Miranda, at a prayer service in Boston this week, "We inhabit a mysterious world."
