Agencies offer ways to cut junk mail

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - A new website offered by Lexington officials is full of links to help stop the deluge of junk mail in your mailbox.

The Opt Out Program was launched by two Lexington agencies, but the links will work for anyone who wants to cut down on the amount of mail arriving each day.

The Lexington Herald-Leader says information on the website shows how to reduce or eliminate phone books, catalogs and junk mail. There's also information about blocking credit card offers and unwanted phone calls.

The website is http://www.lexingtonky.gov/optout .

Each site linked from the page has its own preferences to set. For instance, visitors can choose to receive one phone book and designate which they prefer.

The city says changes could take up to six months to take effect.
