Agency donates to gambling problem helpline

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky Department of Charitable Gaming has donated $2,500 to a telephone assistance line for people who think they may have a problem with gambling.

The Kentucky Council on Problem Gambling offers the helpline, which is also sponsored by the Kentucky Lottery Corp. and Keeneland Race Course.

Charitable Gaming Commissioner Marty Hammons said in a statement from the Kentucky Public Protection Cabinet that the helpline received nearly 900 calls last year. Of those calls, Hammons said the caller was provided with some type of service such as referral to a certified counselor or Gamblers Anonymous meeting or sent material about gambling problems.

The helpline's number is (800) GAMBLER or (800) 426-2537.
