Alcohol banned during voting

KENTUCKY (WKYT) - If you enjoy an alcoholic beverage with your lunch you had to hold off today.

Thanks to an 80 year old law that's still on the books in the Commonwealth. Its illegal to serve or buy alcohol on election day.

The law goes back to prohibition days where bars and saloons also served as polling stations.

The manager at Horse Shoe Kentucky Grill and Saloon says its a little quiet around his bar, usually in the middle of the day they have their regular group that will take in a cold one.

"Most of our business is in the evening but we have plenty of people to stop by you know sit around and talk to the bar tender have a drink have lunch they can't do that today," said Sheldon Schneider.

Bartenders can begin serving again when the polls close at 6:00 P.M.
South Carolina is one of the states that has a similar law.
