HARLAN, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky program for at-risk youth has a few more spots left in its first class for 2013.

The Appalachian Challenge Academy announced Wednesday it has extended its recruiting deadline until Sunday.

The program is based in Harlan and funded by federal and state government. It is sponsored by the Kentucky National Guard.

The academy held its first graduation in December with 60 cadets.

The program is a 22-week curriculum that enables students to obtain a high school diploma. It also focuses on physical fitness, leadership and community awareness.
