Area code meeting draws small audience

Posted: Thu 4:33 PM, Oct 18, 2012

HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A meeting about a new area code for western Kentucky drew an audience that could have nearly fit into a phone booth.

The Kentucky New Era (http://bit.ly/WEanrG ) reports three people attended the Wednesday meeting at Hopkinsville Community College.

Kentucky Public Service Commission spokesman Andrew Melnykovich says the meeting was held to explain the reasons behind a new area code and to go over options for adding a new one.

Melnykovich explained two options for a new area code.

One is an overlay option, meaning the 364 area code would apply to all of western Kentucky in addition to the existing 270 area code.

The second option is a split, which would divide western Kentucky into two separate regions and assign either the 270 or 364 area code to specific areas.
