FORT KNOX, Ky. (AP) - The U.S. Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox will get a new leader.

Maj. Gen. Jeff Smith is relinquishing command to Brig. Gen. Peggy Combs during a ceremony on Thursday.

Combs will be the first female commanding general of Fort Knox in the post's 96-year history. She previously served at Fort Knox from 2011 to 2012 as the deputy commanding general of USACC. She comes back to Fort Knox after serving as the commandant of the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Smith oversaw the transformation of the Cadet Command's summer training programs, the Leader Development and Assessment Course and the Leader's Training Course.

In his next assignment, Smith will serve as deputy chief of staff for the International Security Assistance Force.
