Arts facility gets $5 million upgrade, additions

Lexington, KY- One learning center in Lexington is getting a major upgrade thanks, in part, to generous donations from the community.
The Living Arts & Science Center boasts interactive exhibits like one made out of an old trampoline as a means of getting kids engaged in arts and sciences.
With its expansion in the form of a brand new, $5 million state-of-the-art building, the center will include more than 18,000 square feet of learning space.
Lexington will now have its own planetarium, also.
"We needed more space for our programming. We do a tremendous amount of field-trip programs and classes and community events," said Heather Lyons, Executive Director of the LASC.
Other changes include the addition of a digital art studio, art gallery space, a teaching kitchen and urban green space.
"We work with the common core to develop our programming and we find areas where there's a void in the current school system to add on- we also work a lot with at-risk youth," said Hannah Huggins, Board President of the LASC.
Ground was broken Tuesday and construction can now begin on the project, which is expected to be complete by late summer of 2015.
The Living Arts & Science Center doesn’t just work with kids, but adults also.
They say they’re well over their current capacity of 40,000 people who participate in activities.
