Auditor: Ex-school leader got unapproved benefits

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky's auditor says a former northern Kentucky school superintendent received nearly $224,000 in unauthorized benefits and payments during an eight-year period.

The review by state Auditor Adam Edelen says former Dayton Independent Schools superintendent Gary Rye was reimbursed $146,276 for his personal retirement contributions and service credit purchases - benefits not included in his contract.

Auditors found he was paid $47,429 for sick and annual leave days that he should not have received.

Edelen says his report has been referred to the FBI.

The auditor says the unauthorized payments amounted to $240 per student in a district where most students receive free or reduced lunches.

Edelen launched his review last fall after Rye's successor raised concerns.

Rye retired at the end of the 2012 fiscal year. A phone listing for him could not immediately be found.
