Boyfriend charged with murder of MSU student

ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. - Police tell us they have a suspect and a confession but the family of 21 year old Cassie Owens still doesn't know why this happened.

Police went to Christian street in Morehead yesterday after 26 year old Casey Shay showed up at the jail and told police that he had shot his girlfriend.

They responded to their home where they found Cassie Owens dead in her bedroom. Police say she had been shot twice.

The couple have a two year old daughter who is now staying with family members.

We spoke with Owens' grandmother this morning. She said this was a tragedy for both families. They had lost a granddaughter and the family of Casey Shay now has to deal with him being charged with murder.

The one thing she wanted to make clear was what a great mother Cassie was and how much she'll be missed.

Workers at the coroners office say they're still waiting for Cassie's body to be released by the police before any funeral arrangements can be made.

MOREHEAD, Ky. (WKYT) -- Police say a Morehead State University student has been killed, and her boyfriend has been charged with murder.

Morehead Police say Casey Shay, 26, shot Cassandra Owens, 21, twice on Wednesday.

Owens was a sophomore at Morehead State University.

Thursday, Morehead police were called to a home on Christian Street, near downtown, where Owens lived.

They say Casey Shay confessed to police that he killed Owens. She was found dead in her bedroom.

"The crime actually happened yesterday (Wednesday) morning, and he took a day to decide what he was going to do about the situation, and then confessed," Morehead Police Chief Mike Adams said.

Police say Owens and Shay have a 2-year-old daughter together, but police say she was not at the home at the time of the shooting, and is now staying with family members.

The news of the murder came as a shock to family and friends.

"We didn't hear anything, no altercations or anything," neighbor Deshawn Deshazor said. "Yeah, this is just a real shock that someone is dead on our block."

Officials at Morehead State University say Owens was a University Studies major, and was enrolled part-time.

"We are all saddened and heartbroken by the death of one of our students," said Morehead State President Wayne D. Andrews. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Cassandra. The loss of life at such an early age affects us all."
