Bachmann: Hurricane and quake a message from God

Updated: Tue 12:09 AM, Aug 30, 2011

Was it a joke, or was she serious?

Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann told a crowd yesterday that God is getting the attention of politicians with an earthquake and a hurricane.

"I don't know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We've had an earthquake, we've had a hurricane. He said are you going to start listening to me here? Listen to the American people, because the American people are roaring right now because they know what needs to be done. They know the government is on a morbid obesity diet. It's got to reign in the spending. This is not a difficult problem to solve."

A spokeswoman for Bachmann told reporters the comments were made in jest. But later, Congresswoman Bachmann said she was serious, and didn't mean for her words to be taken lightly. She said her prayers go out to the families of the storm victims.

The Congresswoman is running for president.
