Barr sworn in as Congress tackles budget problems

WASHINGTON (AP/WKYT) - In November, voters ousted Democrat Ben Chandler in favor of Barr in Kentucky's sixth Congressional district.

While there there was plenty of pomp and circumstance on the floor of the House and Senate Thursday, Barr and all the other lawmakers face the same big budget problems that produced gridlock in the last Congress.

There are nearly 100 new members in the 113th Congress, and this group of lawmakers is the most diverse in history with record number of minorities and women taking the oath.

Despite grumbling in his own party, John Boehner has been easily re-elected to a two-year term as House speaker.

The vote came a day after blistering attacks from lawmakers, including Republicans, over Boehner's decision to cancel a vote on aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy. In the end, only 10 Republicans voted for someone else as speaker. Boehner received 220 votes. Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi got 192 votes.

Boehner struggled to hold back tears and hinted there will be a battle over government spending with President Barack Obama.
