Beshear active in seeking McConnell challenger

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear says he's part of efforts to recruit a Democrat to challenge Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in next year's election in Kentucky.

Beshear told reporters Wednesday that McConnell is vulnerable as the Republican prepares to face voters in his bid for a sixth term.

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, seen as a rising star in Democratic ranks, is considering a Senate bid but has given no timeframe for making a decision.

Beshear says others may be pondering a run against McConnell. He says he doesn't know who the Democratic nominee will ultimately be.

Meanwhile, tea party activist David Adams says McConnell will face a tea party challenger in the GOP primary.

Adams says two possible candidates are weighing the race, and one of them will join the campaign.
