FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Gov. Steve Beshear has concluded a visit to the American Cemetery at Omaha Beach where he participated in a wreath-laying ceremony.
Beshear and his wife, Jane, also placed flags Thursday at the graves of several Kentuckians who were among the thousands of Americans killed there to liberate Europe during World War II.
As a veteran, Beshear said the ceremony was "very emotional" when "Taps" was played to honor the dead.
The governor is in Europe on a trade mission where he has been meeting with political and business leaders to promote Kentucky.
Beshear visited Omaha Beach with Laurent Beauvais, president of Lower Normandy. Beauvais is calling for the D-Day beaches where American and Allied troops launched the invasion of German-occupied Europe to be listed among UNESCO's world heritage sites.
