LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Rush hour traffic turned deadly Monday at the intersection of Georgetown Road and Iron Works Road.
"About 5:30 this afternoon, we got a call that a bicyclist and an SUV had been in a collision. When we arrived we found one person apparently deceased from the collision," explained Lt. Chris Young of the Lexington Police Department.
The front end of the SUV showed just how bad the crash was. The hood crumpled back, with a large dent in the middle of it, a signal light was jarred out of the socket and hanging by the wires.
"Anytime you hear of a vehicle versus a person or bicyclist certainly it's tough situation. Just the dynamics of a vehicle," said Lt. Young.
A police officer from Georgetown was the first to arrive, from there Lexington police joined in and began to study the scene in an attempt to learn what happened.
"It appears the bicyclist was attempting to cross Georgetown from Iron Works and the vehicle was coming inbound on Georgetown," described police.
However, police say they're not sure who had the right of way on the road, at this time, but they are talking to witnesses who saw the whole thing happen.
"Once they get all the witness statements and compare notes they'll be able to make a determination on that," answered Lt. Young.
The Fayette County Coroner's office identified the cyclist as Lawrence Crawford of Georgetown. No one else was injured in the crash.
Georgetown Road, heading into Lexington, was closed for hours as police surveyed and cleared the intersection.
