Big Blue Madness extra special for one family

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's a new season in the Big Blue Nation! Friday, it was "madness" at Rupp Arena as UK basketball fans got their first look at this year's team.

Big Blue Madness was packed with many memorable moments. UK Hoops Coach Matthew Mitchell, and some of the UK Men's Basketball players, broke out in dance. Coach Cal joined some Big Blue legends in a tribute to each of the program's eight national championships. Thousands of UK fans were on hand, and for one 13-year-old, this night was extra special.

"It's a nice break from the chaos," explains Shawna Palmer, with a smile.

Palmer's daughter Brianna has battled cancer since she was five. Her family, proud UK fans, camped out to score seats to Big Blue Madness.

"We have good days, we have bad days. So far, the days seem to be getting better. We've got surgery schedules. It looks like we've raised the money and from at least what we need and so that's been a definite blessing."

Big Blue Madness is a chance for fans to meet both the women's and men's basketball teams for the 2012-2013 year.

"She's just ready to meet Nerlens and all the new guys," Palmer says of her daughter Brianna.

And for families like the Palmers, no matter what problems they face, big or small, they're given the chance to celebrate with teams they love.

"When we come in the door, we don't have to think about the medicines. We don't have to think about the schedule. We don't have to think about, 'well, can she get up and down the steps?' Everyone's been great."
