LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Lexington chapter of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the YMCA Child Development offices have been temporarily moved after a car came crashing through their building.

The crash happened over the weekend at the building the two organizations share on Georgetown Street, and it may be weeks before they can move back in.

"I'm thinking April Fool's joke," says Eric Ward, the President and CEO of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass.

We're told that a woman was pulling into the parking space and instead of hitting the brakes, she hit the gas. The car slammed into the building where the utilities are located knocking out power to the building.

"The inside wall of that office on the first floor is pushed in about three or four feet and everything that was sitting against that wall got thrown completely to the other side of the other room. A lot of broken furniture and broken glass was flying around," says Ward.

No workers for either organization were in the building at the time of the crash.

"Thank goodness because if somebody had been on the first floor, particularly in the office that was struck, there could have been some injuries," adds Ward.

Both organizations have temporarily moved out and are working out of other offices to serve the community, but it has caused some inconveniences.

"I don't know if there is ever a good time for something like this to happen. Now is certainly a difficult time for us because we're in the middle of our largest fundraiser of the year. So we want everyone to know that we're still in business and and still operating every day."

Both organizations are hoping they can return to their home offices within the next three weeks.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is operating out of the Plantory building at the corner of Midland and Third Street. The YMCA Child Development office is working out of the High Street YMCA.
