Fayette Mall, other stores to jump start 'Black Friday' on Thanksgiving

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - With Black Friday coming up in less than two weeks, some are wondering whether "Black Thursday" might be a better name.

"We were at Sears last year at 8:00!" said Thanksgiving shopper Robyn McDaniel.

The majority of stores at Fayette Mall will open for those big sales just as people are finishing their turkey dinners at 8 p.m. Some say that's just too early.

"I sure hate to see people have to go to work on Thanksgiving," said John Jonczy.

"I would prefer opening much later," Margaret Norris said.

Others, though, said the earlier, the better.

"8 p.m. is good. Everybody's had dinner and the kids are already in bed," said McDaniel.

By midnight Thanksgiving evening, nearly every store at Fayette Mall will be open. Only one store will wait until the sun rises on Friday morning.

Dillard's won't open until 8 a.m. Friday. Neither will some other stores like the new Lexington Costco.

"You've seen a little bit of pushback against these earlier and earlier start times," said Dr. Aaron Garvey. Garvey is an assistant professor of Marketing at UK's Gatton College of Business and Economics. Over the next few years, he thinks stores will offer those Black Friday deals online as well as in their stores.

"A lot of people want to be able to sit at home and get the same deals without having to get up and go stand in the cold," said Garvey.

Lots of people, though, say their shopping traditions are just as important as the turkey and gravy.

"It's mom and I. Every year I'm with her. My dad doesn't love it, my husband doesn't love it. We just have fun. Girls' time!" McDaniel said.
