Black Friday shoppers stay in line for Thanksgiving

Updated: Thu 8:07 PM, Nov 22, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT/AP) - Put down that turkey leg. It's time to shop. No, really.

Stores typically open in the wee hours of the morning on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday, named for the period when stores traditionally turn a profit for the year.

But Black Friday openings have crept earlier over the past few years.

Now, stores are opening their doors Thanksgiving evening, hoping Americans will be willing to shop soon after they finish their pumpkin pie.

"It's just a holiday, it'll come again next year. This deal that I'm staying outside for, that's only going to happen once. It's worth the sacrifice." Jose Vasquez is just one of the handful of people passing up the holiday traditions for great door buster deals at Best Buy in Lexington.

Campers have been lining up outside of the store in Hamburg since Tuesday evening. "I'm on day three and I feel great," explains Austin Smith, the first person in line. "A family day shouldn't just fall on a holiday, a family day should be every day. I know I'll see my family when I get home tomorrow morning so I'm ok with it."

Many stores are opening their doors for shoppers at midnight tonight.

At 6 a.m., Meijer in Hamburg offered discounts on electronic items. "There are a lot of deals to be had if you just look for them," explains Ronald Mitchell. "This will be the first Thanksgiving I'm missing with my family but the deals here are too good to pass up, honestly."

KMart opened Thanksgiving morning at 6:00 AM. Walmart plans to start offering their deals at 8 p.m. "I'm a huge discount shopper so this is my favorite time of year," explains Mitchell, "I love the energy of the holidays and I love the deals!"
