Black ice blamed for deadly crash in Laurel County

LAUREL CO., Ky. - (WKYT) Suzan P. Whitaker worked for C and C Communications, a 2 way radio shop in London. Police say she was going there to work just about eight o'clock on Thursday morning, when a patch of black ice on a bridge ended her life.

Flowers have been put at C and C Communications where 53 year old Sue Whitaker worked..for 18 years. She died en route there this morning when an icy patch on a bridge spun her Jeep Cherokee into the path of a semi truck headed towards Somerset.

"Where she was out of control sliding, she crossed into the path of the truck sideways," said KSP trooper Don Trosper.

Police say it doesn't appear that Whitaker was wearing a seat belt, because she was ejected from the jeep.

"The whole purpose of the seat belt is to hold you in that car in a's possible she could have survived, "said Trosper

Yet police say the ultimate cause of the crash was simply because of the weather.

"The thing with black ice, it is there on the roadway you find it when you start sliding," said Trosper

Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol as factors in the crash.
