Midwest blizzard leaves thousands of travelers stranded

Updated: Tue 12:56 PM, Feb 26, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The blizzard that ripped through the Midwest on Monday has officials at Blue Grass Airport urging travelers to check their flight status before they leave their homes.

So far, no flights have been cancelled due to the storm, however, a trickle down from other cities could impact flights here in Lexington. "Sometimes it's not the weather in the city you live in that impacts your flight," explains Amy Caudill, with Blue Grass Airport Public Relations,
"it can be the weather at your final destination or your connection that impacts your travel plans."

Currently, hundreds of flights are cancelled throughout the Midwest. Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois are under winter storm warnings. On Monday, parts of OK and TX had over a foot of snow with hurricane force winds over 74 mph.

Here in the Bluegrass, we could possibly see some light snow on Thursday as this system makes its way through, but nothing compared to the Midwest.

"It never hurts to just check with your airline before you leave as well as the airport at your final destination. It will help you prepared just in case something changes because of weather," explains Caudill.
