TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) - A judge has raised the bond of a southern Kentucky man accused of fatally shooting a former sheriff in what police have called a possible revenge killing.
WBKO-TV reports that Circuit Court Judge David Williams found 81-year-old Charles Hammer posed "a danger not only to the public but to himself" and increased his bond from $150,000 to $5 million cash.
Hammer is charged with murder in last year's slaying of former Monroe County sheriff and former Tompkinsville police chief, 82-year-old Herbert "Sprocket" Proffitt.
Proffitt arrested Hammer a decade ago, and authorities have said they think a desire for revenge prompted the slaying.
The judge said he made the decision Wednesday after hearing about several alleged threats Hammer made toward current Monroe County public officials.
