Book drive helping Fayette County children

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A community-wide effort is underway to boost children's literacy in Fayette County, and you can help.

Members of Leadership Lexington are teaming up with several agencies in town for the Once Upon a Story book drive. Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., volunteers will be at the Nicholasville Road Walmart to collect books. The goal is to give a new book to thousands of children.

"It's really important to foster love for books for children at a young age. Nationally, we have children entering high school at a third grade reading level and so our big drive is to get these books in the hands of the children so they can start at a young age and take it upon themselves. If you have a book, and you have the education, you can have the power to drive yourself to be whatever you want to be," explained Leadership Lexington volunteer Whitney Glass.

If you miss Saturday's book drive, you can take donations to any Lexington Fire Department now through April 15th.
