BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - For the second year in a row, Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green has been named the best high school in America by a national news magazine.

The school was ranked fifth in 2011 and first last year in the Newsweek magazine rankings. The list of 2,000 U.S. high schools includes a total of 19 Kentucky schools.

The rankings are based on graduation rate, college matriculation rate, college entrance test scores and college-level curricula performance.

Gatton Academy Director Tim Gott said nearly every city and county in Kentucky is represented at the school.

The Gatton Academy opened in 2007 and is Kentucky's only state-supported residential high school with an emphasis in math and science.
