Boy Scouts drum up unique fundraising event

Updated: Wed 6:18 PM, Oct 24, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's a unique event that will help raise money for a great cause.

More than a hundred people will rappel down the Big Blue Building in downtown Lexington over the new two days to help raise money for the Bluegrass chapter of the Boy Scouts.

"Times are tight for a lot of non-profit organizations," explains Boy Scout Council President Billy Forbess. "That's why it's so remarkable how many people have come out to help us raise money. The program includes 11,000 boys and girls, and the money will go towards events and activities for the members."

Community members from all across the Bluegrass, including the Lexington Police Department, rappelled 410-feet from the 30th floor of the Lexington Financial Center. "I'm terrified of heights!" explains Forbess, "but as the council President I knew it was my responsibility to lead by example."

Forbess was the first of many to rappel down the 5/3rd building this morning. "I can't explain what this turn out means to us. Our goal was to raise $135,000. As of this morning, we've surpassed that goal, and with our fundraiser tonight and the event going on all throughout tomorrow I can only imagine how much more we're going to raise."

The chapter has also broken the record for most money ever raised for the Over the Edge organization, the group that is overseeing the event. "This is a big event and a big deal for many people here. the Boy Scouts help our youth in many ways and I'm just grateful so many people have come out to help."

The event will end on Thursday with the last person to rappel down the building being the mascot for the Lexington Legends.
