LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Crews are working on some bridge repairs over Newtown Pike, but it's causing major traffic troubles on I-75 near mile marker 115.
Two lanes were closed around 9:00 Thursday morning and it didn't take long for traffic to back up. Vehicles started to slow down around mile marker 113, which is about two miles down the road.
Some drivers were getting off exits, trying to avoid the closure, but similar to Wednesday, it only created more traffic problems on roads in town.
Transportation officials say road work has been going on everyday this week. Wednesday and Thursday, especially, have created some trouble spots for drivers.
Officials say the closures are necessary for repairs though and drivers should expect to see more of it throughout the upcoming months.
"Anytime you close two lanes, especially within a city or urban environment, you can expect backups," says Natasha Lacy, PIO Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. "As I said, we have to do this to maintain the bridges and make sure they're in good working order. In addition to that, there are construction projects that are active too during this time period."
The closure on I-75 north near mile marker 115 is for bridge deck repair work and the resealing of bridge expansion joints.
Crews will be out here working until 3:00 Thursday afternoon.
