Bus drivers focus on basics in back to school training

Updated: Fri 8:08 PM, Aug 10, 2012

You put your children in their hands every day. That's why a Central Kentucky school district is sending their bus drivers back for their own form of school, to make sure your children are protected year-round.

You'll soon see yellow buses hitting Lexington roads. School starts for Fayette County Public School students next week. But for the drivers behind the wheel, education never stops. About 500 bus drivers and monitors got a tune up at Lafayette High School Friday. Part of their lesson plan included customer service.

"That image is that we are here to take care of the kids to do everything that we possibly can from a safety standpoint and do it in a manner that will provide the professionalism," explains Director of Transportation John Kiser. He is hoping this back to the basics approach keeps even veteran drivers like Rachel Fergerson learning something new.

"Today I've learned how to maintain children how to keep my composure when situations erupt on the bus. If we handle customer service in a respectful way then our public will look at us totally different, in a positive manner," notes Fergerson.

Drivers' main goal going back to basics is to keep parents at ease, knowing their kids will be safe.

"We are making a commitment to them that we're gonna bring the kids back the way they brought them to us," says Kiser. He says last year the district reduced their number of preventable collisions by 20 percent.
