LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A main intersection near the UK campus remains closed because busted pipe.

WKYT is told a storm water pipe collapsed on Friday at the intersection of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue.

"What we were able to do was insert some steel plates above the area where there was a break, to keep traffic from driving directly over it. But the streets around the area have been blocked today. We need motorists to please be patient with us as we continue this work. And obviously safety is a main factor for us," said Mark York, with Lexington's Division of Environmental Policy.

York added, "We inserted a camera in this area over the weekend to discover that a storm sewer line had collapsed. And we're not sure what caused this particular line to collapse. We don't know if there's some erosion around the pipe or something else that has happened. We hope to get a better idea once we uncover this whole area today."

We've learned that a twenty foot section of pipe will need to be replaced, and York says that could take several hours to complete.

Until then, Rose Street is closed to thru traffic between Rose Lane and Maxwell Street. Traffic on Euclid headed toward Rose Street will be diverted onto Linden Walk.

But if you're travelling on Avenue of Champions toward Rose Street, you will be allowed through the intersection.
