Buyers fill the Bluegrass for Keeneland's September Yearling Sale

Updated: Mon 8:13 PM, Sep 10, 2012

People from around the world are here at Keeneland looking to buy horses.

With signs that the economy is beginning to turn around, some at Keeneland say the same goes for the horse racing industry.

"Our parking lots are full. All of the rings are full of buyers," Walt Robertson, Vice President of Sales at Keeneland says.

The September yearling sale at Keeneland is the largest in the world.

It's also an event that can greatly help or hurt our local economy.

"It's terribly important to the farmers that raise these horses. I mean, this is there cash crop. They're taking their crop to market right now. And this is their pay day to the whole year," adds Robertson.

There are 3,600 horses for sale this year, which is slightly down from last year.

"I think this will be a stronger sale than last year. It's like 700 horses shorter than last year. So you have more quality over quantity," says
Seth Kochera, who represents several buyers.

"Supply and demand might be our friend again. It's been our enemy in the past," Robertson says.

Some buyers admit they have more money to spend on horses this year. Other people in attendance at Keeneland tell WKYT they plan to buy in the future.

"The speed at what you enter is the speed at what you typically get kicked out. So I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can first before I start to bid. But I'll be buying some horses in the future, I hope," says Lexington resident, Alex Riddle.

Staff at Keeneland encourage the public to come out to the sales this year. You don't need to be looking to buy a horse to take part in the annual Bluegrass experience.

The September sale runs through September 21st.
