Cal needs stopper, may play more zone

Updated: Tue 12:01 AM, Jan 15, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - John Calipari has coached several young teams in the past but he says this one is different. It does not have a defensive "stopper" on the perimeter. Going into Tuesday night's game with Tennssee, Calipari talked about playing more zone than he ever has coaching.

In coaching at Kentucky Calipari has always stressed defense, man-to-man defense. With his team coming off Saturday's loss to Texas A&M, Calipari is looking for a "stopper." "It may be Archie (Goodwin), see if he can do it. We're trying some different things, some things I've not done in my career."

One of the different things is playing zone, which Calipari tried against the Aggies Saturday. "I played more zone in that game than I have since I've been the coach here." The zone is something he may go to more down the road. "We've spent more time on zone defense in the last two weeks than we have in my entire coaching career. We're trying to figure out, the whole thing is, how do I put these guys in the best position to win?"

Kentucky and Tennessee tipoff at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday night in Rupp Arena. The game will be televised by ESPN.
