Cal says Alabama won with guts

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - In Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa Tuesday night, Alabama quickly wiped out a nine point Kentucky halftime lead. John Calipari said the Tide did it with guts.

Alabama fought back to win 59-55 with good guard play and the strong inside play of Nick Jacobs. Looking at the stat sheet, it may have been hard to tell. "They shot 36 percent, 15 percent form the three, got outrebounded by 12 rebounds, listen folks, and won. I love that kind of game, it's a gut game and nothing to do with anything else."

Going in, Calipari called it a "guards' game." Archie Goodwin and Ryan Harrow both went through a terrible night, a combined 5-24 from the floor. Calipari said, "Our guard play was not near their guard play, just wasn't. Ya know, we riverted back to just throwing it to Kyle Wiltjer in the post, to try to keep the game close to give us a chance to win and we had our chances."

Kentucky again played without Willie Cauley-Stein. Nerlens Noel finished wit 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots. But after the game he said he needed to play with more discipline. "I came up off my feet, I wasn't disciplined. I should have stayed on my feet and stayed disciplined. I definitely owed that to my team."

The Cats have now lost six games. Wiltjer, who led Kentucky with 14 points, said this loss hurts as badly as the others. "I mean it kills anytime you lose, so it definitely hurt, especially because we know we could have won the game."

Calipari said neither team played well but Alabama had the guts. "They gutted it. They had discipline at the end, we did not and that's sometimes what happens with a young team but you've got to give them credit."

Kentucky returns home Saturday to play LSU in Rupp Arena. Pregame coverage begins at 3:00 p.m. on WKYT, tipoff at 4:00p.m. and post game coverage will immediately follow with a special edition of "Wildcat Wrapup."
