Cameras catch burglars stealing copper from Lexington business

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Security cameras captured burglars in the JD Harper & Sons roofing company's warehouse on Payne Street about 1 o'clock Sunday morning.

The cameras were still rolling when they came back a second time about 12 o'clock that afternoon.

Ben Harper, the owner, tells us that the hooded burglars took off after stealing $500 worth of copper and power tools.

Harper says the burglars also caused about $500 in damages when they peeled back a metal warehouse door to break in.

Harper says he's been with the company since 1995. He tells us that his business becomes a target for copper thefts when the economy isn't doing well.

He says including these latest break-ins, his company has been hit by burglars three times in the past month.

"It's very frustrating because someone puts out the effort to go to all this trouble to steal tools. If they'd apply that effort in a more positive manner I think they could provide for themselves and their families in an honorable way," he said.

We’re told police will start investigating when they receive the inventory of stolen property.
