Vigil held for former high school basketball star killed in crash

SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - On Friday night, friends of a former high school basketball star, who died following a crash, gathered to pray and remember him.

A candlelight vigil was held in Scott County for 27-year-old Tyler Hicks.

The 27-year-old was well known in his community as a basketball player, the son of Coach Hicks, a U.S. Army soldier, and a friend.

"He was the heart of the team, and it's appropriate because he was the same way off the court. He had a heart, fun-loving guy, and he had the biggest heart. He would do anything for you if he could," said Matt Jarvis, who was friends with Tyler.

Since the accident on Bluegrass Parkway while he was on leave, they have been praying for Tyler Hicks and his recovery.

But he died today after suffering severe head trauma from the wreck which changed what the vigil was about.

"Now it's about everybody getting together and realizing how precious life is and realizing that even though everybody is young, we are all in the same age group and anything could happen. And we all need to be supportive and help the family," said Derek Helms, another friend of Tyler's.

And although Tyler cannot be replaced, those who knew and loved him say he will never be forgotten.

"A lot of memories ingrained. The world is going to miss him. There's no question about that. And this community is going to miss him, and they're going to miss seeing him. It's just hard," said Jarvis.

A visitation will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. and his funeral Monday at 6 p.m. both in the Scott County High School Gymnasium.
