LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - He pleaded guilty to federal escape charges back in July, now Derek Capozzi was back in court today to hear his punishment.
Capozzi escaped from a prisoner transport van back in April of 2010.
That spurred a three-day manhunt along the Blue Grass Parkway in Woodford County.
Capozzi was serving a 53-year sentence for a crime he was tied to in Pennsylvania, and was in Kentucky to testify in a criminal trial.
Today, he received an additional 51 months for his escape charges.
We spoke to Capozzi back in 2010 to ask him about his decision to escape from the transport van.
"I'm going to die in prison or I can die out in the streets. I have a better chance of getting out there and maybe assuming a new identity and taking care of my issues out there, then I do sitting in prison waiting to die," Capozzi told WKYT.
Capozzi's heart was injured in a stabbing while serving time in another prison outside Kentucky, and that was the reason given for running.
Today in court, the judge recommended he be checked out and treated if need be for that injury.
Capozzi will be serving his time for this sentence in Florence, Colorado.
