Updated: Mon 1:03 PM, Oct 15, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A popular restaurant will be closed for days after a car crashed into it before being burglarized.

Police were called to Sarah's Corner Cafe at the corner of Winchester and Cleveland Roads around 3:00 Monday morning. The vehicle was no longer on the scene when officials arrived, but the front of the restaurant was severely damaged.

Police said the the crash appeared to be an attempt to get into the building to steal from the business. The driver allegedly stole several cartons of cigarettes.

"Why would you do more damage to your automobile to get in then you can to steal in there. All they got were 10 to 15 cartons of cigarettes it looks like," said Ralph Egbert, the owner of the building.

The owner said he will likely keep the restaurant closed for a week as the damage is assessed.
