UK students displaced after car slams into townhome

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A group of University of Kentucky students are trying to figure out where they will spend the semester after a car crashed into the living room of their townhome.

"The car just went straight through my house," said freshman Alex Bumpus.

He says he just moved into the townhome in Newtown Crossing on South Broadway Friday.

"I don't even know what to say right now. It was a freak accident. I'm thankful we weren't there," Bumpus said.

Police tell WKYT around midnight a driver tried to hit the brakes but hit the gas instead and slammed into an occupied car, sending it straight into the townhome.

Police say a total of five cars were damaged in the crash.

Alcohol and drugs weren't involved so police don't believe charges will be filed.

"Accidents happen but it's kind of a dangerous, scary accident to happen," said Jada Love.

She tells WKYT she also moved into one of the townhomes two days ago. Love says she's trying to understand how this happened to her neighbor.

"It's bizarre, it’s very unusual, especially in a neighborhood like this. There are a lot of speed bumps and you're supposed to go slow. I don't understand how someone could mess up five cars and an apartment that we just moved into," Love said.

Bumpus says management is putting him up in a hotel for now and will eventually move him into another home.

"I want to focus on school but at the same time I'm trying to have a roof over my head, it's weird," he said.

Firefighters tell WKYT the townhome has been condemned. They say amazingly, no one was hurt in the crash.
