Case of suspected serial carjacker waived to grand jury

A grand jury will hear the case of a suspected serial carjacker, who police say may have stolen at least seven cars.

Lexington Police testified during a preliminary hearing Monday morning for Wesley Rutherford.

Detective Jason Rothermund said evidence led police to the Extended Stay hotel on Wilhite Drive. Managers there had called police after several people brought vehicles to the hotel.

"They tried to return vehicles they said they had rented from and individual they said was named Wesley and was staying in room 312," said Detective Rothermund.

While cleaning that room workers at the hotel found multiple sets of car keys, at least one of which police linked to a car stolen from Alexandria Drive. That room was rented by Wesley Rutherford's brother.

But police say their big break came after a car was stolen from the Home Goods parking lot on New Circle Road. Police say after the car theft Rutherford took one of the victim's checks to a bank and tried to cash it, leaving his ID behind.

Investigators said Rutherford was on his way to pick up one of the stolen vehicles when he was arrested July 12 on Second Street. They say once in custody Rutherford admitted to several crimes.

Rutherford is suspected of targeting women by telling them something was wrong with their vehicles.

He is also accused of hitting a victim with her car while trying to get away from the Speedway station on South Limestone.

Rutherford faces charges of robbery, wanton endangerment and theft by unlawful taking.
