Changes in trash billing looming for Lexington residents

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington leaders may change the way you pay for garbage service.

Current policy designates that Lexington residents pay for trash service based on the value of their home. Now the Lexington-Fayette County Urban Council is considering several alternatives, including a flat rate, contracting out the service, or paying by the amount of garbage.

The pay as you throw option, would be based on the size of your Herbie.

Councilman Kevin Stinnett claims the change would encourage more people to recycle.

"Well if they chose not to recycle then those choosing not to recycle obviously would pay more," says Councilman Stinnett. "We have a goal in the city to be trash free by 2020 and that
would encourage others to recycle more."

If the city goes with the pay as you throw option, the average cost per month is projected to increase from $13 to $25 a month for trash service.
