Charity celebrates second anniversary with bake-a-thon

Updated: Tue 6:25 PM, Feb 26, 2013

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - There's a whole lot of baking going on at Maxwell Street Presbyterian in Lexington. More than 60 volunteers were there to help out the Sweet Blessings charity.

"I called two years ago and asked if you need help and I've been here ever since," says volunteer Rodney Day.

Sweet Blessings cakes go to impoverished children or kids dealing with serious illnesses who may not otherwise have a cake to celebrate their special birthday or special occasion.

"You don't see the kids, but you hear the stories sometimes and hear from adults too who remember their childhood and would've gotten our cakes," says Sweet Blessings founder Ashley Gann.

Gann is using Tuesday's Bake-A-Thon to celebrate the second anniversary of Sweet Blessings.

Knowing these cakes will put a smile on the face of many central Kentucky children makes the sacrifice worth it for many volunteers.

"I'll take a big shower when I get home because I'll smell like cake and icing," says Day.

Chick-Fil-A is also supporting Sweet Blessings by donating 10% of proceeds from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday to the charity.

Lexington and Georgetown stores are participating.
