SCOTT COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - A child had to be rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon after being injured in an accident while sledding.
Around 3 p.m. Monday, two girls were playing on a snow-covered hill, near Muddy Ford Road. The problem is the hill ends at the roadway with no room to stop or slow down. A 12-year-old girl, whose name hasn't been released, found that out in a bad way.
Scott County Sheriff Tony Hampton said the girl went down the hill on an inner tube and ended up hitting the road at the same time as a state salt truck was driving by.
"The truck was moving, actually scraping the road, and the child just went down into the road and into the side. It appears one of the back tires ran over her legs," said Sheriff Hampton.
The girl was seriously injured, but it was not life threatening. She was taken to UK Children's Hospital, and the Sheriff said she left the scene responsive.
"It's an unfortunate accident at no fault to the child or the driver of the salt truck. The kids were just out playing," he said.
The Transportation Cabinet sent out their own investigators to take a look over the scene. While it may be an accident, it did have a serious effects that all parents can take away.
"I would caution parents to maybe urge their children to not go towards the roadway if possible," encouraged the Sheriff.
While the Transportation Cabinet will continue that investigation, Sheriff Hampton says the driver was obviously shaken by what happened.
